Description: Alaska experiences a lot of earthquakes! Geologic activity is monitored by federal agencies, and the data is publicly available. Using this data is an exciting way to learn authentic science that students can meaningfully apply in their lives. In this course, we will learn about some user-friendly data portals, and get an overview of several searchable data bases of curriculum and resources for teaching a variety of topics related to geological hazards. The focus will be on lessons that use data in a digital formal, but examples of hands-on lessons using cheap, easily obtainable supplies will also be provided. Lessons are aligned to the state science standards for AK, and can be adapted for upper elementary through high school.
