Description: It’s a Big World Out There is a professional development course set to assist teachers in accomplishing curriculum goals in an outdoor setting. Participants will explore the theory and practice behind outdoor education, participate in required curriculum learning about the Tiered Outdoor Teaching Triangle (TOTT) and learn about a variety of community partners that are able to provide resources ranging from field trip funding and materials to staffing and subject matter expertise. Participants will learn how to take their existing curriculum and lessons outside while still ensuring that lessons are designed to meet Common Core State Standards while reconnecting students to the natural world. With each component of the course, teachers will identify the barriers to going outside with their classes, discuss strategies and existing research that supports outdoor learning, and participate in field trips to their own outdoor spaces, including local parks and/or trails and outdoor classrooms. Participants will finish by developing a solid strategic plan on how to take their students outside safely and routinely.
